Dead Head Dessert
Dia De Los Muertos or Day of the Dead, a Mexican holiday traditionally celebrated on Nov 1st and 2nd is a joyful celebration where friends and family join together to pay respects and to remember those they have known who have died. It features whimsical skeletal representations of the dead playing guitar, making tortillas, even dancing with each other.
Home altars are constructed and adorned with favorite foods and beverages of those who passed as offerings for the departed, but the living are also rewarded with candy sugar skulls and other sweet treats to celebrate the day. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to put my own spin on these festive delights!!
“Dead Head Dessert” is constructed with a pear shaped gourd decorated with a pyrographed traditional design and finished with hand applied inks. The “brain” pudding, so to speak was created with wet molded leather and the head was suspended in an orthopedic external fixator device.
